Performing masculinity as drag king Devonixhas led my fictional fantasies to powerful, dark roles. Since my time as an Otherwise Fellow, I have transformed into the Phantom, a dapper charmer, and a ruthless warrior to name a few. I’ve wielded swords, unclasped suspender clips, and broken a full length mirror with a candlestick. The city of New Orleans has embraced my darker side and I was voted Top 5 Drag King and Drag Newcomer in 2020 FLAME Magazine and featured on the STAMPS School of Art and Design Alumni website. Below is a list of the live drag events I performed in since being selected as a fellow.

Since the start of the 2020 global Covid-19 pandemic, performances in venues have shut down. To combat this physically distant ordered obstacle, performers have turned to virtual live streaming shows and pre-recorded film viewings. Myself included. The dedicated event producing performers Laveau Contraire and Tarah Cards created New Orleans First Online Drag Festival: Cyber Distancing I submitted and was accepted to Cyber Distancing, combining my artistic skills of performance and video editing to debut Devonix’s first drag king music video shown below.

Being selected as the 2019 Otherwise Fellow gave me a sense of accomplishment and recognition on an institutional level. The support received at the beginning of my drag career solidified my artistic quality, embraced my gender-bending concepts, and rewarded my dedication to this artform. I am forever grateful to the Otherwise Fellowship for taking a chance on Devonix for all that he was, has become, and will continue to be.
