Alice Sola Kim | A Residence for Friendless Ladies | F&SF | Kim's fiercely written story has a transgender hero, a creepy she-ghost, and a houseful of angry women, but even without those features it would qualify by virtue of its savage satire of institutionalized femininity. Andrea Host | The Pyramids of London | Andrea K Hosth | Although the sheer number of women in this story is delightful, it was the arc of the main character that makes me recommend the book. G.G. Lucas | The Emperor's Dragon: Book 1 | Amazon Kindle | An often black humored, satirical piece blending comedy in science fiction with pointed criticism of gender dynamics in the form of the analogous "species rolls” put upon its main character, Ito. Through the twists and turns of a quickly moving narrative, the protagonist is thrown into a part of the universe ready to assign him the designation of “Avarian,” the rare, mythical and most highly desired species in existence, a designation Ito finds both ridiculous and unrelenting. What transpires is his bull-headed attempt to navigate this tricky new situation with as much nuance as a tank without its breaks. ggdonnahue.com | 2015-06-27 20:21:30
Marguerite Reed | Archangel | Resurrection House | On one hand, a moving book filled with incisive observations of a society using a woman as a screen onto which to project anxieties about decorum, parenting, violence, and all the rest. Megan Derr | The Broken Forest | Less Than Three Press | This wonderfully gender positive and sexually diverse tale doesn't make a big deal about its topics. Adamina is transgender, but it's neither a problem nor an issue worthy of note. It's simply part of her character. Similarly, the budding romance between Adamina and Grete is neither celebrated for being unique nor condemned for being unusual. It's just a friendship with sexual undertones that brings the two women together, and drives a happily ever after.bibrary.blogspot.com/2015/04/the-broken-… | 2015-05-29 10:41:07
Peggy Barnett | Lips Like Ice | Circlet Press, Inc. | The Prince, when we meet him, is a smooth, hairless, genderless being, on the cusp of maturity . . . at which time he will choose a gender. Karin Slaughter | Go Deep | Random House | (NOTE: SPOILERS AHEAD!) It's 1974 in Atlanta, where Charlie Lam is having a very bad day. After being cursed by a homeless man, he finds himself slowly being transformed into what he hates and fears the most - a woman. Once an aggressor towards women, he finds that the tables have turned. Darkly humorous, and not for the squeamish, with a fair amount of body horror scenes, Go Deep is like "Metamorphosis" through a feminist lens, and satirically examines the source of harassment and oppression women face, every day. http://www.karinslaughter.com/other-writings/go-deep/ | 2015-05-05 13:47:21

Elizabeth McCoy | Crucible | Terran Alchemy | This book is the most interesting exploration of gender I've read in ages. It's a little hard to go into why without being spoilery, but suffice it to say that there are characters who change their assigned birth sex, and their assigned gender, and THEIR SOCIETAL GENDER, and all of this is happening in a faintly-renaissance world where gender ROLES are pretty firmly defined. | 2015-04-08 06:27:21

Eleanor Lerman | Voices in the Night | Aphelion: The Webzine of Science Fiction and Fantasy | The transgender psychic in this speculative fiction tale is the key to the story's theme about time and transformation. aphelion-webzine.com/serials/2015/04/voi… | 2015-04-06 05:02:33
Michael Dante DiMartinoBryan Konietzko | The Legend of Korra/Season 4, Episode 2: "Korra Alone" & Episode 13: "The Last Stand". | Nickelodeon | For Korra herself as a young, bisexual woman of colour, her struggle with PTSD and depression (esp. in Ep. 3), the diversity of the Avatar world, in particular the number of main female characters and their interactions, and the beginning of Korra's romantic relationship with Asami at the end of Ep. 13, and for the effect of DiMatino's and Konietzko's story-telling on a wide audience, seeing themselves represented in these characters. | 2015-04-05 04:06:49

Katherine Addison | The Goblin Emperor | Tor Books | This is a subtly feminist take on high fantasy, with a great deal of discussion of gender roles, social evolution, and patriarchal expectations hidden in the cracks. Highly recommended. | 2015-04-02 09:49:43
William Gibson | The Peripheral | Putnam | The gender-relevant elements of this novel may not be immediately apparent, but a careful reading reveals that Gibson is slyly presenting a post-gender society, one where the physical body is malleable to the point where sexism and gender assignment are literally irrelevant. The speaking-part cast is almost evenly divided, and there's at least one trans character who is treated in a very matter of fact fashion. | 2015-04-02 09:44:47
Laura Bradley Rede | Beast in the Mirror | indie published | This YA contemporary fantasy re-imagines Beauty and the Beast through a queer, feminist lens, interweaving issues of body image and gender to reclaim the "tale as old as time" in fresh and unexpected ways. amazon.com/beast-mirror-laura-bradley-re… | 2015-03-18 12:37:05

Ashley Harper | VisionWalker | Hunt Press | This first novel in Ashley Harper's VisionWalker series contains powerful female protagonists and explores same-sex love in the context of temporal, martial, and spiritual power and magical initiation. Similar to the tiptree tiara-crowning (though on the other side of the gender aisle) all monarchs in Harpers world are kings, regardless of their biological sex.ashleyjharper.com/books.php | 2015-02-11 11:32:00

Anita Sarkeesian | Tropes vs. Women in Video Games | Feminist Frequency | Anita Sarkeesian's work as a pop culture critic focusing on gender in video games made headlines in 2014 for the backlash it has garnered, but her work itself is entirely worthy of special recognition from the Tiptree jury. Although not itself a work of science fiction or fantasy, Sarkeesian's creative criticism masterfully exposes and indicts the gender-based tropes of a medium which has spawned some of the most beloved SFF-nal narratives of the past 40 years. youtube.com/user/feministfrequency | 2015-01-23 23:13:40
